How to Apply for a Visa

Why do I need to apply for a visa?

Australia has a universal visa programme which means the Australian Government requires all persons entering Australia to hold a valid visa. In order to be granted a visa you must meet Australian Government requirements for a visa. There are a number of visa options available for people who wish to enter Australia. What visa would I be eligible for?

In order to be granted a visa you must be found to meet Australian Government requirements for a visa. If you do not meet these requirements your application will be unsuccessful. There is no refund of visa application fees or charges if your application is unsuccessful.

How long will it take to process my visa application?

Your visa application is processed by the relevant Australian Visa Office. Visa applications are processed by Departmental officers. Australian Biometric Collection Centre staff do not process or decide visa applications.

The Australian Visa Office encourages lodging complete applications to avoid processing delays. When submitting your application, please refer to the document checklist to identify the supporting documents to attach to your application.We are unable to advise applicants of a likely decision date.

Please note that the Department will only respond to enquiries after the published processing time has elapsed

It is strongly recommended that you do not make final travel arrangements until your visa has been granted.

If you included an email address on your visa application the Visa Processing Office will communicate with you through this email address. It is important to check your junk email regularly to ensure that emails from the Visa Processing Office have not accidentally been sent to junk.
